Nibarn watched his son leave with disgust dripping from his face. A fierce snarl on his lips, he stared at the closed council room door. He shook his head and turned to the councilors, his cultists. “Each of you has your stones prepared? If Lestar turns on us, we will make our escape. And pursue our work elsewhere. I have prepared a place.” None answered, but they all nodded in solemn agreement. “Though I do not expect any reason we would actually need them. Best to be safe, though.” He turned from the group, walking to another hidden door that would lead him to his personal chambers. “I will be in my study. Get some rest. Tomorrow will be the pinnacle of our climb to archdom.” His thoughts were on his own ascension and his reward for serving Lestar. He craved her, he desired to be with her. It was not just a lustful impulse, but a psychological and physiological drive. Nothing gave him more joy and pain in his life. As he walked down the stone path inside the castle to his room, the voice returned in his head in a loud and sharp shout. “Stop this now! End it! Turn back!” It sounded like an echo in his head, and yet somehow reverberated off the walls.

He shrieked in fright at the words he heard, “Who’s there?” He spun around the darkened hall. The voice again spoke, much more prominent and coherent. “Turn back from this now. You doom yourself.”

Nibarn’s eyes were wide in anger. “Silence! You know nothing of me or my plans!” he shouted, his hand reached for his wand.

The voice danced on the air as if it was being passed through the cracks in the stone the voice whirled in and through him. “Turn away. You do not have to do this. Put a stop to it now–” Before the voice could continue, Nibarn flicked his wand in the direction of what he thought was the person or creature talking to him. A lightning bolt struck forth from the tip and it cracked into the stone. The force from the hit blew out the dim light from the torches magically ensconced on the wall. Nibarn drew back his wand again, ready to strike if the voice returned. His movements ushered new light from the flames and they flickered on again. Scoffing, he continued down the serpentine hallway. “Nothing,” he said to himself. “It’s in my head. I need another orb to calm myself.” He thought about how many of the delicious orbs he had gained. The dark elven priestess had given him dozens to hold and devour when he so desired. He had been rewarded, and this was just the beginning.

A foot from the secret entrance to his chamber, the voice returned, its words penetrating his mind and settling deep within his soul. “Turn back now. Or be damned.”

Nibarn hunched over, gasping as if he had been punched in the stomach. Within him, he felt his soul cry out in protest, fighting against his body as he tried to stand again.
